What it covers
The sequence for surveying the supply, isolating the consumer unit, installing the new circuit and fixing the charge point. It records the earthing arrangement and protection chosen, the cable route, and the tests and certificates before the charger is handed over.
Hazards and controls
Electric shock at the consumer unit, controlled by safe isolation, lock-off and proving dead. An unsafe earthing arrangement, controlled by checking the supply and fitting the protection the installation needs. Striking buried or hidden services, controlled by drawings and a cable locator before any digging or drilling. Then silica dust from drilling masonry, vehicles on the driveway and work from steps. Controls follow the hierarchy, so isolation comes before PPE.
Competence and certification
EV charger installation needs an electrician qualified to BS 7671 and trained in the IET Code of Practice for EV charging equipment installation. The method statement names the competence and the standards it works to, so a client or principal contractor can check it at a glance.
FAQ
- Does it cover safe isolation and earthing?
- Yes. Safe isolation is part of the numbered method, and the earthing check is a step before the charger is connected. Both are in the risk assessment with the matching controls.
- Can I add my own steps?
- Yes. Download it as Word and edit anything to match the supply, the charger and the cable route you are using.
- Will it be accepted on site?
- It follows the HSE five steps and the CDM 2015 framing site managers expect. A competent person still has to review and sign it off before use.
- What does it cost?
- Your first document is free. After that, £15 each, three for £35, or ten for £89. No subscription. You can read a full sample before you decide.
