What it covers
The sequence for clearing the room, lifting the old covering, preparing and levelling the subfloor, and laying the new floor. It records drying times before anyone walks on the compound, how the area is kept closed off, and how waste and packaging are removed.
Hazards and controls
Asbestos in old floor tiles and bitumen adhesives, controlled by checking the survey before anything is lifted. Dust from grinding the subfloor, controlled by extraction and the right respiratory protection. Vapours from primers and adhesives, controlled by low-solvent products where the specification allows, then ventilation. Then skin contact with levelling compound, knife cuts, and long periods of kneeling. Controls follow the hierarchy, so the asbestos check and extraction come before PPE.
Competence and training
Flooring needs a competent floor layer, trained in the preparation equipment and face-fit tested for any tight-fitting mask. The method statement names the competence required and the standards it works to, so a principal contractor can check it at a glance.
FAQ
- Does it cover asbestos in old floors?
- Yes. Checking the asbestos survey is a step before any old covering is lifted. Work stops if suspect tiles or adhesive would be disturbed.
- Can I add my own steps?
- Yes. Download it as Word and edit anything to match the room, the subfloor and the covering you are laying.
- Will it be accepted on site?
- It follows the HSE five steps and the CDM 2015 framing site managers expect. A competent person still has to review and sign it off before use.
- What does it cost?
- Your first document is free. After that, £15 each, three for £35, or ten for £89. No subscription. You can read a full sample before you decide.
