What is a RAMS?
RAMS stands for Risk Assessment and Method Statement, two documents that go together. The risk assessment identifies the hazards and the controls. The method statement sets out the safe, step-by-step sequence of work. Principal contractors almost always require both before they let you start on site.
What a good RAMS template includes
Project and site details, scope of works, a numbered sequence of works, and an HSE-structured risk assessment (hazard, who might be harmed, existing controls, a likelihood by severity rating, additional controls and residual risk). It also covers PPE, plant and equipment, permits, access and egress, welfare, first aid, emergency procedures, environmental considerations and a sign-off sheet. - Is a RAMS a legal requirement?
- The risk assessment is a legal duty under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The method statement isn't named in law, but it's industry best practice and principal contractors require it as a condition of getting on site.
- Can I edit the document?
- Yes. You get both an editable Word file and a PDF, so you can tailor it to your site before use.
- Will it be accepted on site?
- It's built to the structure and standard site managers expect (HSE 5-step, CDM 2015). Always have a competent person review and sign it off before use. That step is required however a RAMS is produced.
- How much does it cost?
