What a RAMS is
RAMS is a Risk Assessment and Method Statement, two documents that go together. The risk assessment names the hazards and the controls. The method statement sets out the safe, step-by-step sequence of work. Most principal contractors want both before they let you on site.
What a good one includes
Project and site details, scope of works, a numbered sequence of works, and an HSE-structured risk assessment: hazard, who might be harmed, existing controls, a likelihood-by-severity rating, additional controls, residual risk. Plus PPE, plant and equipment, permits, access and egress, welfare, first aid, emergency procedures, environmental points, and a sign-off sheet.
Template versus written for you
A downloadable template is generic. You still have to know the hazards, write the controls, and tailor it to the site. Here you describe the job and get that content written for you, with the hierarchy of control applied and the compliance basis shown on each section. You review it, then download as Word or PDF.

- Is a RAMS a legal requirement?
- The risk assessment is a legal duty under the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The method statement is not named in law, but it is standard practice and principal contractors require it to get on site.
- Can I edit the document?
- Yes. You get an editable Word file and a PDF, so you can tailor it to the site before use.
- Will it be accepted on site?
- It is built to the structure and standard site managers expect (HSE five steps, CDM 2015). A competent person still has to review and sign it off before use, however the RAMS was written.
